I hear the sound but i don't get a desktop notification. I won't argue with you. I used to get desktop notifications for google calendar running in chrome. It Does This Even Though I Have Not Used Apple's Mail App In Over A Year.

I have no icloud or local calendars. This adds the website as a dedicated app icon in your dock. I can see all those events on calendar.google.com, but not on mac calendar. I hear the sound but i don't get a desktop notification.
